Mocha Porter straddles that netherworld between opaque and translucent. Darkest walnut with crimson highlights. The ecru head was barely one finger to start and quickly deflated to a patchy film, leaving a small amount of soapy lace.

This beer smelled more like coffee than beer. In fact, it didn't smell like beer at all. I have it on good authority (my favorite bargirl... sorry barwoman... sorry bartender... sorry bartendress) that no less than 40 lbs. of 'locally roasted Friedrich's coffee' was used in each kettle. More specifically, Mocha Porter smelled like freshly ground Arabica coffee beans. On steroids.

To continue the theme, it tasted more like iced coffee than beer. As one who doesn't like coffee, it was so overpowering as to drown out nearly all traces of beerness. However, once I got over the initial palate shock and tried a few more sips, it became apparent that all was not quite lost. As the java tidal wave receded within each mouthful, a fruity, slightly bitter beer flavor emerged, leading to a pleasant finish.

If you like coffee, Mocha Porter will give you paroxysms of delight. If, like me, you prefer your beer to taste like beer, you'll be less than thrilled. This is a tough one to score since it isn't bad beer, but didn't appeal to me in the least. As always, I'll attempt a reasonable compromise.
