Served in a tulip glass at Pittsburgh Independent Brewery. This "white stout" was a reddish amber color that looked more akin to an unfiltered wheat or Belgian than a stout. It had a thin head that dissipated quickly without leaving much lacing.
Despite the appearance, the mild nose contained the coffee and chocolate notes of rich roasted malts. I'm not sure if coffee is an ingredient as well. Overall aroma was weak, possibly due to the serving temperature.
The dark chocolate/coffee notes carry through to the taste, which is surprisingly sweet and creamy - reminiscent of a milk stout. The flavor profile is straightforward but not disappointing. The malts dominated and bitterness was surprisingly low. I'm not sure what hops were used, but they only appeared as a brief bitterness in the finish.
Mouthfeel was creamy with medium carbonation. A little less "chewy" than I like in my stouts, but the lighter character worked well with the malty sweet flavor.
Overall, something I'd love to come back to. It was a collab for Pittsburgh's craft beer week and I'm not sure if it'll stick around, so I'm glad to have sampled it when I had the chance.
