On-draught into a nonic @ the brewpub in late 2014:
HEAD: Half finger wide.
Creamy, thick, full, soft-looking, luscious. ~2 minute retention. No lacing. Has a nice even consistency.
BODY: Translucent dark deep sanguine red. Subpar vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate/sediment is visible.
Overall, it appears well-carbonated. But it's far from apt for a brown ale.
AROMA: Vanilla, cinnamon, amber malts, bready malts, cream, faint coconut. A pleasant aroma of average strength.
I find no brown malts, nuttiness, or English character at all. Smells more like an amber than a brown ale.
No noticeable hop aromatics or booze.
TASTE: Vanilla, cinnamon, oatmeal-raisin cookies, amber malts, caramel, cream, and mild toastiness. No nuttiness or brown malts here. Some mild sweetness. Bread crust.
Poorly built for a brown ale. Imbalanced, tending towards the sweet side. Complex enough for what it is. Boasts some limited subtlety as well.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. I do like it in spite of its flaws.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, perfectly medium-bodied, aptly thick, creamy, and approachable. Complements the taste nicely, but it's not custom-tailored to the flavour profile, failing to elevate it as a whole or to accentuate specific flavours.
OVERALL: Drinkable and enjoyable. Not a sipper nor a session beer. I wouldn't get it again, and I like it in spite of it not being much of a brown ale. Sort of a niche brew that lies outside style conventions.
