Served on-draught @ Rock Bottom Colorado Springs in Winter 2014:
APPEARANCE: 1 finger in height. Khaki colour. Nicely creamy, full, and thick. Has an even consistency and a soft appearance. Nice complexion. 3-4 minute retention. Leaves an even coating of lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.
Body is an opaque solid black. No yeast/sediment is visible within.
Appears well-carbonated. Not unique or special within its style, but right on the money for conventions. A nice looking beer overall.
AROMA: Deep roasted barley, dark malts, chocolate malts, chocolate milk, milk chocolate, cream. The ample malty sweetness has no hop opposition; there's only the roasty bitterness to balance it out.
A pleasant aroma of mild strength.
No overt yeasty notes or booze is detectable.
TASTE: Has a sweet dark malt and chocolate malt backbone with complementary notes of cream, faint caramel, chocolate milk, light milk chocolate, and unfortunately timid roasted barley.
Balanced but a bit tame and simple for an imperial stout. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.
Nice as this is for an introductory imperial stout, you just need more intricacy to stand out in this oversaturated style. I like it, but it's a bit basic.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, creamy, soft enough, well-carbonated, medium-bodied, and of apt thickness.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough or scratchy.
Complements the taste nicely, but it fails to accentuate specific flavours or to elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Drinkable and enjoyable, but not a stand-out in the style by any stretch. I do like it, but it's very conventional without feeling classic and I can't see it competing in the imperial stout category given the myriad better expressions of the style widely available across Colorado (let alone the U.S. and abroad).
Sweet enough to be a dessert beer, but not at all boozy. More drinkable than many sipper imperial stouts, but then I imagine the ABV is lower as well.
