RBB Long Beach, CA
ELDER ALE
British-style IPA.
Presentation: One of the regular rotating special offerings from RBB-LB. This one was described to me as a British-style IPA and listed at 6.5% ABV.
Appearance: Hazed golden yellow body with a dirty white head. Head retention was good and the conditioning was sturdy, fresh from the tap it looked good in the RB handled Mug.
Nose: Floral flowery aromas, wheat hidden in there with a soft sweet malt background. Not that hoppy, the hops tend to be a little grassy.
Taste: Very weird, took me a while to get to grips with this one. Flowery start, Belgian Wit like body is laced with grassy hops, but they are never bitter. Heavy on the floral aspects and wheats. Doesnt seem to jive together that well.
Mouthfeel: Thinnish body to start with but the wheat laden middle and turbid conditioning manage an average pleasant feel overall.
Drinkability: I struggled to finish this one towards the end. Nothing bad about this, just that it was a little befuddled with a high floral wheaty aspect that was too much in the long run for this brew. One glass was enough.
Overall: The first time that I have tried this particular special from RBB Long Beach. Not that enamored with this one to be honest, more like a Wheat brew than an IPA. OK, but nothing I would return to.
