The Atomic Ho' Bomb is an Imperial IPA that has been barrel aged in bourbon barrels. Poured at the Warrenville Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery. Served in a 12 oz. snifter.
The appearance is a dark mahogany red with little to no head or lacing. Rather boring looking.
The smell is bourbon up front with an American hop tartness in the middle. The malts are sweet and caramel smelling (crystal malts) with perhaps a touch of chocolate malts for added sugar, but the sweetness lies in the back of the smell, though it grows as the sample warms.
The taste consists of Bourbon, apple cider, cinammon, and nutmeg. The hops support the bourbon; a balance between the hops and the bourbon flavors sit on the same part of the palate, the middle, sides, and front of the tongue. Not as astringent as many hoppy American barrel aged stouts, as the balance lies more on the salty side. As the brew warms, a toffee maltiness appears. Alcohol taste is not overwhelming and is in the background.
Mouthfeel is thick and weighty, yet effervescent enough to still offer the sought after carbo-bite found in most carbonated beverages.
One of the best barrel-aged beers I've tried. It's something new , interesting, complex, and most importantly more delicious than one would expect from an unlikely combination of style and brewing technique.
