On tap at Monkey Paw in San Diego.
Definitely on the sweet side, but more like a bitter liqueur than a sugary beer. Rich, clean, with a pleasant sharp taste. Big nose of caramel and flowery hops. Touch of resin and butterscotch. A little hot with alcohol and a hint of rum. Great spicy and fruity flavors. Not so much on the Belgian funk, but it's one of the nicest sipping strong golden brews I've had this year.
To be picky about style, this should really be a Belgian Strong Pale Ale, since the 7% mark is mostly what distinguishes these two categories. This current version is listed at 8.2%.

On tap at Rock Bottom La Jolla.
A: Medium gold with a one inch white head.
S: Sweet bready malt with a touch of alcohol. Redolent of candied apple and pear. Lightly phenolic with notes of clove and white pepper.
T: Very sweet, almost candied, with notes of bready malt, apple, pear, and alcohol. The fruit is pretty strong and booze is not subtle. Clove is moderately spicy thoughout, and the finish has some white pepper to add to the sweet apple and pear.
M: Medium body with lower moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is smooth and stick.
Overall: An okay beer. A bit too sweet for me.

On tap at Rock Bottom San Diego, CA on 7/9/09.
A - Clear golden/amber body with sparse carbonation and thin off-white head that diminished to a thin ring of retention and left some spotty lace around the glass.
S - Spicy yeast and sweet candi sugar up front with some peppery notes and clove. Some spicy fruity notes suggesting apple and pear are also apparent. Alcohol is well concealed in the aroma.
T - Spicy initial flavor with hints of black pepper and clove. Some fruity esters sweeten the yeasty, spicy quality of the beer. Apple, pear and candi sugar come to mind. Finish is quite sweet overall.
M - Medium bodied with a syrupy texture and moderate carbonation. Finish is sweet and a bit spicy on the palate with a prickly carbonated mouthfeel.
D - Well-balanced Bengian style ale with a spicy, yeasty character and nice drinkability for an 8% ABV beer.
