On tap @ the King of Prussia Rock Bottom (King of Prussia, PA) on 8/30/12. Served in a pint glass. This is an American IPA brewed with a combination of Simcoe and Amarillo hops.
Pours a hazed burnt orange, with a finger of creamy bright-white head. This retains with roughly a ½ finger of creamy froth, which slathers the sides of the glass with a sticky latticework of lacing. The aroma smells fresh, piney and dank, with extra notes of grapefruit, lemon and some sweet grains across the back. The hops really sit here at the front of the nose.
The taste is fresh grapefruit, pine, spice and herbal textures; with a sweet bready backbone that does a good job of balancing the bitterness here while still mostly staying in the background. The finish on this is dry and spicy with a resinous feel that hangs in there. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm and prickly feel on the tongue but then more of a smooth and creamy feel as this spreads out across the back of the palate. There is a touch of alcohol warmth present but it doesn’t interfere at all with the drinkability of this.
This was good, as I think the dank and ripe flavors of the Simcoe paired well with the spicier and piney aspects of those Amarillo hops, while this stayed quite well balanced and drinkable overall. This is another solid IPA in a long line of them from this location.
