In talking to Christian (the brewmaster) this beer came about as several Gordon Biersch locations had "IPA" hops that they weren't going to use. He took them and made this beast.
8.5%. Hopped in the mash, kettle, whirlpool, and double dry-hopped.
Bravo, Crystal, Amarillo, Simcoe, Wakatu, and more.
Appearance: Pours a hop hazy deep orange with a nice thick white head. Good retention and thick, spotty lacing.
Aroma: Very bright hop aroma on this. Tropical fruit and citrus with lots of melon (cantaloupe) on a slightly sweet but pale malt structure. Hints of resin and pine, but largely avoids any "dank" qualities. Very fruit forward. Very nice aroma.
Taste: Opens with juicy citrus and melon character. Hints of tropical fruit as well with slight pine. The fruit forward aspect of this beer is so nice. Bitterness is medium to high, but balanced with nice pale, sweet malt structure. A very well put together beer. Easy to drink for 8.5% and 85 IBUs.
Feel: Again, bitterness is firm but balanced. Finish is a nice lingering mix of fruit, sweetness, and bitterness. Never cloying or palate wrecking.
Overall: Big and brash, but very pleasing and technically sound. No hop astringency or harshness. In the top tier of Double IPAs in the DMV.
