On cask at Barley's Mini Real Ale Fest 2011. I don't normally try any Gordon Biersch stuff, but this was pretty much the only unique style at the fest. Everything else seemed to be an IPA. Also I have been wanting to gain more experience with the Altbier style.
Appearance.
This beer had quite the substantial head, especially for the day. Most other beer's suffered from the gravity poured casks. This one sported a puffy, off white head that sat atop a clear copper body.
Aroma
Quite a bit of toasty bread. It is actually much more fruity than I expected though. It has that ale yeast/fermented fruits and berries kinda smell. Hops are minimal.
Taste
A bout equal parts rich, sticky bread dough and caramel malt. The back end has a bit of that ale fruitiness found in the aroma. Hops only balance things with a grassy bent.
Mouthfeel
Thin bodied and dry. Carbonation is low and fluffy. Its rather smooth.
Overall
This is decent but it doesn't stand out. Its just a solid ale, of a style that is quite uncommon.
