somewhat more refined and less enormous than i remember this being in the past. not sure if it changes from vintage to vintage much in terms of recipe, but this seems more professionally refined, better executed overall than i recall, subtle too in the right ways, not overly woody but its an awesome accent and mellower, and not as sweet and alcoholic as i had it in my head that this used to be. a lighter brown color and a nice airy white head from the tap, looks a lot lighter than it is. a maple note in the nose with the chocolate malt, a whiskey character like vanilla and wet oak, charcoal, and honey, and a grounding earthy element too. its complex for sure, and its weirdly light in feel to me now, almost effervescent in terms of carbonation and finishing relatively quickly for what it is, not the big heavy diabetic strong ale i remember from this at all. trace toasted coconut, molasses, and brown sugar here, soft oak tannins, and a wintery warmth. really good stuff, the best beer i have had from these guys in ages, and even better than i remember it being from several vintages ago! a high point in their profile for sure.
