330ml pour on-draught @ the brewpub for 45000 VND. Hot/rainy season seasonal.
35 EBC. 28 Bitterness Units. 5.00% ABV. Red ale. Brewed with Cascade hops, Australian specialty malts, and local water.
HEAD: 1cm wide. Off-white colour. Fair froth. 2 minute retention. Uneven lacing.
BODY: Vibrant reddish copper colour. Translucent; transparent. No yeast/lees are visible within.
It's a nice looking red ale, though in no way unique.
AROMA: The soft citrus and floral character of Cascade is evident. Yeast character is slightly spicy, evoking more of a European yeast character than a North American one. Pale malts, amber malts.
Clean and fragrant, with a seemingly superb balance of hops and malt. Though its hop profile seems one-dimensional, the beer has an appealing overall aroma with ale yeast subtleties adding ornamentation throughout.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Underhopped by international style standards but happy by Southeast Asian ones.
Mouthfeel is thin and weak, lacking the body and heft needed to support a good red ale. I suppose that suits the flavour in the sense that the malt backbone (if you can call it that) is also anything but robust, bereft of the amber malt punch that is at the heart of the style.
A blip of toastiness appears, though it's not enough to tip this towards an Irish red. Pale malts fill out the body, but the sweetness thereof is always kept in check by the subdued Cascade hop bitterness, which is accompanied by mild (read: weak) floral flavours. Contrary to what the aroma might suggest, Cascade is poorly showcased here.
Balance is rough around the edges, but mostly there. Build is simple for the style. It's a shallow beer overall, but it at least offers more flavour than most Vietnamese lagers.
Texture is dry and dragging on the palate. Rough and fatiguing, which holds it back from ever being refreshing.
OVERALL: Those hoping for a red ale on par with those currently produced in Great Britain, Ireland, or North America will be let down, but it's a definite step up from most Vietnamese beers. Drinkable albeit forgettable fare, but I imagine its meagre hop presence will keep it popular amongst Western visitors to Nha Trang, if only because that's as good as you can get here.

Wow, what a treat to come across after drinking countless SE Asian macro lagers!
Apprearance is a nice, crystal clear reddish brown with a bubbly 1 inch head that reduces to a thin film and leaves some nice lacing on the massive mug it's served in. Smell is of faint caramel and biscuit with hints of hops and bread. Taste is malty up front with big caramel and bready notes which turn more towards a citrusy, bitter hop flavour mid sip and on to the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, crisp and clean with a tingly aftertase that soothes the throat on a hot January day in Vietnam. This is an ideal session ale that goes down real smooth and is a very refreshing pair with many different types of food - they brewer reccommends to pair it with sausages or red meat but it did just fine with a steaming bowl of tom yam, lemongrass mussels! A real treat for a BA in Asia - cheers to Louisiane!
