330ml pour on-draught @ the brewpub for 45000 VND (obscenely priced by local standards).

80 EBC. 23 Bitterness Units. 5.00% ABV. Dark Lager (a Czech style Tmavy.in this case, not a German style dark lager). Brewed with Kiwi Willamette hops, Australian specialty malts, and local water. Year round offering.

HEAD: Soft and creamy, with a khaki colour. Frothy and appealing; right on the money for a Tmavy. Retention is good - ~5-8 minutes. Leaves a nice coating of even lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Deep dark brown-black. Opaque. No yeast or lees are visible within.

It's a nice appearance for a Tmavy, though not a uniquely appealing one.

AROMA: Amber malt (syrup), cream, caramel, dark malts. Not too bready. Buried hints of roast. I look for raisin, but I don't think I find any.

Aromatic intensity is subdued for a Tmavy. Sweetness/attenuation seems style-appropriate.

No overt yeast character or hop character. No overt off-notes.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Creamy and smooth - true to the Tmavy style. Medium-bodied but not too thick, filling, or bready. Well-carbonated.

Taste is sweet without going overboard, emphasizing malts - in this case dark malts/dunkel malts and maybe some chocolate specialty malt. A muted hint of dark fruit starts to lend this some needed complexity, but the flavour profile is relatively shallow overall, preventing any less overt flavours from really landing.

To style, neither hops nor yeast(s) are emphasized. Malts dominate.

Balanced albeit simplistic and lacking any nuance. A true to style but plain Tmavy build.

OVERALL: Unrefreshing (to style) but certainly drinkable. It's a lager of fair body and nice enough flavour, but fails to hold a candle to the best Czech expressions of the style. It's easy to see why beer enthusiasts might adore this beer after slogging through the pale lagers that dominate the local (Vietnamese) market, but drinkers with a more measured response and awareness of traditional paragons of the style will find this a notch above the norm at best.

330mL pour at the brewpub. From notes.

A - Poured nearly black with a nice beige head. Good rings of lace and a film of retention.

S - Coffee, roast, some chocolate. Inviting and well balanced.

T - Roast, coffee, less chocolate. Farily simple, but well balanced again and felt nice to sip.

M - Good carbonation, heavier end of medium bodied, and a nice bitterness.

O/D - Seems like a good example of the style. Not as much depth as expected, but smooth and pleasant.
