Clever name. But it turns out that no Santiam hops are used in SantiAmber, just nugget, Willamette, and Cascade. With the Santiam River feeding into the Willamette just a few miles north of Albany, Calapooia might be the best spot on earth to brew a terrior beer with both varieties of local namesake hops. I suppose Santiam hops are best suited for German-style lagers, but what the hell. I don’t imagine most of us would complain if a few Santiam cones made their way into an Oregon amber ale.

SantiAmber was my first Calapooia beer since the new owners took over from Oregon Trader. With sixteen house taps in such a small tavern, I was a bit apprehensive that they may not all be fresh. This ale was certainly as fresh as one could hope for in a brewpub pint. (Score one for good first impressions.) It’s a bit on the brown side of amber – almost chestnut – and sports a ‘stash tickling carpet of light froth with broad lace. It is medium bodied with balanced bittering and a light malty flourish emergent from a protracted finish. The aftertaste is a bit trying but not troublesome.

As with other Calapooia beers, a notably doughy fragrance kicks up upon agitation. SantiAmber tires a bit late in the pint where the mouthfeel takes on a slight dustiness. But it’s still an easy session beer with a congenial disposition.
