Pours a finger and half of head on a dark straw body.
The aroma is chocolate, milk, toast and bread.
The taste has mild lemon bitterness and a nice bread flavor.
The texture is thicker.
Quite enjoyable.

Not retired but seasonal. Dark brown in color and more resembling an English style ale. Hops are there but not in your face. Taste is caramel, toffee, light roasted malt and coffee. Finishes better than expected a nice warmer.

Apparently out of retirement, as I scored a bomber off madeinoregon.com.
Pours a dark brown, nice 2 finger head that lays down to a persistent lace with a fine stickiness.
Smell is delightfully (and quite atypical for winter ales) a huge rush of spicy hop nose... I'm thinking Fuggles or something similar. A hint of chocolate as it warms. Masterfully done!
Flavor is bust a little less interesting than the nose led on... good roasty coffee like note, some toffee and spice. A little hop bitterness makes this one of the better balanced winter ales I've tried the last few years.
Mouth feel is luxurious and creamy, beyond what I normally expect from the 7% abv set.
Overall: I should have ordered more than one of these gems. The label hits at a sense of humor regarding tradition, and that carries over to a lot of fun in my mouth. It is hoppier than you usually would expect from a winter warmer, which is just fine with me, but it still has some great malt notes as well.

Pours a dark brown, almost black with a thin offwhite head. The bottle has a best by of March 2015 so I am assuming this is the 2014 variation.
Nose is roast, toffee, chocolate, a little coffee, some dark fruit and molasses. Flavor is a bit of bitter dark chocolate, cocoa powder, pine and resin hops, a little bitter, not a lot of sweetness. Dry thin finish.
This is fine, but a bit too hoppy and dry.

Pours a very dark color, with a thin tan head that settles fairly quickly. Smell is malty sweet with a hefty dose of aroma hops. Taste is somewhat oakey, with caramel and some dried fruit notes, with a bit of toasted malt hinding in back. Mouthfeel is fairly full of body, some what astringent on the finish. Drinkability is quite good. This would be a good choice on a cold winter night.
