A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2015. Picked up a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. A collaborative effort between Saltaire and Dark Star breweries to celebrate the 2014 Tour de France coming to Yorkshire. Described on the label as a French IPA that uses some French hops and also contains a small amount of coriander.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear coppery-amber hue with light carbonation. Yields a decent head of white foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding. Aroma of caramel malt with hints of fruity hops, mild citrus, floral notes, subtle grass, ale yeast and faint stewed hops. Rather nice.
Tastes of fruity hops and caramel malt with a spicy finish. Notes of orange peel, citrus, mild white grape, grass/hay, stewed hops, caramel, ale yeast and a subtle earthiness in the background. Slightly sweet, followed by a restrained, hoppy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly, with soft carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter fruity hops, mild spice and caramel.
Pretty good (certainly the best of the Tour brews I've tried so far). Looks a tad lifeless, but the aroma and flavour have plenty going for them - a good dose of aroma hops and caramel malt. Nice fruitiness but nothing excessive. Body is OK. Balanced, with just a touch of spice in the background. Goes down a treat; worth sampling if you have the chance.
