A 500ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2015, so it's a little out of date. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. A collaborative brew between Saltaire and Dark Star breweries, this is described as a traditional German bock hopped with Hersbrucker, Hallertau and Challenger (I'm not convinced, hence the designation of brown ale)
A: Poured into a dimpled pint mug. A deep, clear ruby-brown hue with good carbonation. Yields a decent head of frothy off-white foam that lasts for a moment or two before collapsing to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of dark caramel malt with hints of toasted grain, mild barley sugar, a twinge of chocolate, ale yeast and faint stewed hops. OK but unexciting.
T: Tastes of dark caramel malt with a subdued bitter finish. Notes of subtle roasted grain, caramel, mild barley sugar, a hint of chocolate, ale yeast, a touch of grass/hay, stewed hops and faint earthiness. Slightly sweet, followed by a restrained, leafy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and decent body. Could be a shade thicker. Lightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of caramel malt, mild roasted grain, ale yeast and faint stewed hops.
O: Not bad, but comes across as neither authentic for the intended style nor particularly outstanding. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are a staid mix of dark caramel malt, ale yeast and subtle hops. Body is OK. Easy-drinking but forgettable.
