(Notes of 12/2007) Tasted by a half-pint at the Swim Inn, a JDW pub in Sheffield. This ale seems to be a JDW special, hence the name? According to the pump clip, the ingredients include orange peels, star anise and caramel, added to the "German-style wheat bier" base.
A: pours a clear bright copper hue, coming with a thin rimmed head and low carbonation. Quite elegant in appearance.
S: the nose is full of melted barley candy and caramel on top of a weird mixture of spices and predominant orange peels, yet all messed up without a good structure.
T: plenty of star-anise on the palate, like absinth even... plus malt drink and a bag of spices. No form, with little input from wheat-malts and very restrained overall in terms of flavour...
M&D: despite being light and refreshing, the flavour lacks a real bock's mildly tingling & fizzy body and a more enticing malt presence. An intriguing cross b/w barley wine, bock, winter spiced ale, with very little sign of wheat-malts.
