Bottled 6/24/14; drank 7/12/14 @ the Palace.

Clear ruby hue.

Off-white head; decent lace.

Pine needles & bread nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Pine bitterness with a hint of caramel; pickle juice notes emerge as it warms. A cotton-mouth dryness on the finish.

Fairly awful in my opinion.

March 16th, 2015 - The Showdown Rye has a heavy rye and malt character, available as soon as the cap comes off, with sprinkles of chocolate laced in there for a sweet and strengthening effect. It pours a deep and beautiful mahogany color, with a contrasting white head, and about an inch or so of foam. The taste is sweeter than the nose lets on, but gains more rye flavor in the mid and late taste. The aftertaste itself is shorter with a bitter rye note, but its not strong or off-putting. Overall, while the rye quality is subtle in the flavor, it is present and accounted for.

Aroma: citrus, grapefruit,
Appearance: Yellow-orange color. Big white head.
Taste: baking soda, citrus, yeast, rye but not strong rye. Feel. Medium carbonation.
Pretty good, not totally disappointed, but i think i expected this to be a tad better as I like rye in beer.

Definitely has that spicy, bready rye presence in spades, but well-balanced by the hops which are piney and a hint citrusy. Nose has a whiff of vanilla, caramel, malts like you smell on a brewery tour, while the flavor allows some of the hop character to come in and finish the job with a slightly sweet, and less slightly bitter finish. Not much head but lacing sticks around forever giving it a medium body and chewy, sticky texture. This one is a real winner!

Poured a copper body with two finger head and lace ring. Citric hops with touch of rye are strong in aroma with minimal sweet malts in there. The beer is dry and hopped up but I think some of the dryness and crispness comes from noticeable rye addition. Sweet caramel malt adds some background and is not overpowered. Enjoyable, easy drinking dry IPA that is worth trying.

look: Not a very pale amber. Fat, messy off white head and lacing.
smell: Piney and malty.
taste: Mostly like the nose. The finish has some rye spice and lingering bitterness.

(Review A few days later); 22oz, Globe, bottled 08/2014. Had good color, nice head, and reasonably good flavor for being over a year old.

Re-buy.

Updated on 1/2017: 12 oz. At over a year and a half old, there was no hops left, but there was plenty of flavor. Increasing rating.

It's been a good while since I have had a Great Divide offering.Pours into a becker a hazed deep amber /burnt orange with a thinner but well sustained head. This is what a rye IPA/DIPA should smell like, sharp rye and a big shot of resinous and citric hops, really inviting, not to mention nutty malts. The flavors back off just a bit from the aromas, nutty malts with spicy rye over top,the hops don't hit home as much. It's oh so close to being awesome for me,yes there is a growing grapefruit-like hoppiness as I drink more but it doesn't really hit home.Such a teasing beer for me.

Poured into a perfect pint.

3.75 A: Well hazed dark orange amber color. Two fingers of frothy beige head. Retention is pretty good and a half finger of lacing is left.

4.5 S: Big earthy spiciness from the rye. It also gives a cheesy aroma - like a sharp muenster or something. Toasty with some woody undertones. Hops are floral and herbal in nature. Wildflowers and caramel.

4.25 T: Tastes like it smells. Rye spiciness is potent. Mild yeasty breadiness. Toasty malts with a biscuit finish. Again hops are floral and herbal with wildflowers and dusty woodiness.

3.75 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. A mix of silky an chewy.

4.25 D: Really liking this beer. The rye is super strong in this.

A-a cloudy amber with a fingers worth of cream colored head that leaves a nice lacing around the top

S-caramel, raisins, pine, and a light rye spiciness

T-taste is similar to the smell but with more pine and rye spice than in the taste, not as sweet as the smell would suggest.

M-medium body, moderate carbonation

Overall very good rye IPA, very drinkable with a nice amount of spiciness

Fruity, Sweet, Pine, Rye

Partly cloudy copper with a thick beige head. Soft rye, bread, spice and pine in the nose. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Hits the palate sweet, fruity and juicy with a soft citric bitterness along with notes of apple, sticky pine, resin, spice, orange, biscuity malts and fresh grain. Quite dry at the end with spicy rye and a doughy linger. It's a bit gritty, but the showdown between the hops and rye grows on you with each sip, and it's deceivingly drinkable at 8.3 percent. A must try for Rye IPA fans.

64oz growler 11.99. Dark Amber. Aroma is rye, slightly hoppy. Flavor is sticky malts, rye, hops. Pretty tasty IPA that I think I underrated last year when it was in bombers.

Deep dirty copper color and clear. Moderate bar-pour head but it leaves an excellent web of lace.

The smell is slightly sweet with a bit of recently burned ash. I note candied grapefruit on the third sniff.

Neutral start on the flavor but this becomes interesting on the swallow. I taste Fresca (grapefruit soda), darkly toasted white bread and white pepper from the hop. The finish is dry. The aftertaste is a bit astringent with a strong bitterness. There's little to note about the mouthfeel, both the body and carbonation are middle-of-the-road. Succinctly, an interesting beer.

hazy dark amber, no head, light carbonation. nose; cedar plank, pine and sweet caramel - very aromatic. taste; hop resin, citra zest and a sweet malt/maple all raked by the dry, bitter rye profile that doesn't appear in the nose. not a very boisterous mouthfeel or finish (slightly dry) which makes it an easy drink despite the 8.3%. alcohol is hidden nicely. well-balanced for a rye - there's always the challenge of not being oversweetened or super malty to balance a rye. i do like the smell of this one more than the taste. ;)

Picked up a single as part of a pick 6.

I have been interested in more rye beers recently.

I have had some really REALLY good beers from Great Divide. This one for me is just... Good.

pours a clear and succulent orange with a cream colored head of foam that is luxurious and stays long. fragrant rye on the nose. sharp rye with a cracker malt. touch of fruit behind that. layered nose. Sweet floral is the palate. Succulent fruit. A rye that is wholesome and forward. Crisp malt that is made sensual with a soft bit of caramel. A moderate bitter to finish. It's one of the best tasting rye IPA's I have had. It's even a bit malty in the mouthfeel but it stays dry and crisp so that is a wonderful and very "rye" compliment to the IPA hops character in this. Get it wry? Overall a brisk tonic.

Poured into a Great Divide cervoise glass.

Look: The body is deep copper with murky clarity. The vanilla colored head is thick and foamy and leaves a soapy film of bubbles after receding. Nice foamy lacing initially, but it eventually fades.

Aroma: One of the best smelling beers I have ever put my nose to. Spicy rye and clean cedar boards blend with a nice mellow sweet caramel note. They could almost make a cologne out of this, and I'd buy it -- and wear it.

Taste: More of that sweet caramel comes out up front, which is delightful. The rye follows the sweetness and gives a nice balance in it's dryness and spicy woodiness. The finish has some heat in it, where the 8.3% ABV comes out.

Mouthfeel: A little thick, a little creamy. This is a sipper.

Overall: I have been blown away by the last two Great Divide beers I've tried, including this. Really impressed with the aromatics and mellow taste. There's enough of a malt bill to not get kicked in the teeth, I love that.

Beer is red brown in color with a white head that is a finger thick.

Aroma is of American hops, pine and citrus and a hint of spice.

Mouthfeel is smooth and beer is full bodied.

Beer has a malt backbone with a very happy finish and lingering bitterness.

Overall an ok beer. The hops are one dimensional and the bitterness lingers a little long. Impressive drinkability for the 8.3% abv.

I drank this bottle at 6 months old. This was a gusher with about half the bottle oozing out.
L: Hazy amber, 3” cream colored foam cap. S: Spicy malt, citrus.
T: Starts with spicy malt, rye, and big citrusy hop flavors.
F: when it settled down the body was full, a little slickness from the rye and a hint of oiliness with a light astringency on the finish.
O: Despite the infection this was a flavorful DIPA.

This brew pours a solid opaque copper color with minimal head and lacing.

The smell is a mix of hops, it is hard to discern what is in there, it smells like mostly grapefruit and orange, but the rye definitely dominates. This being a Rye Beer that is good.

The taste is dominated by the rye and citrus hops. However the hops seem to run together and the subtle characteristics are lost in the confusion. The rye is dominant however the peppery spice on the back end that I am used to tasting with rye beers is not present. There is a thick caramel backbone and some hop oil remains on the tongue after swallowing.

Overall this is not as good as some of the other rye beers I have tried although I have to admit I am not a huge fan of the style. If you want to try an exemplary rye beer try "Ruthless Rye" by Sierra Nevada.

22 oz bottle, dated Aug 14 2014

pours a hazy dark copper color, with off-white head. nice pleasant hop aroma - floral, a little citrus and earthy flavor as well. the taste has a lot of malt flavor - the hops are really only in the smell and aftertaste. slightly sweet, a little nutty, bready, and caramel. medium bodied, low to medium carbonation.

overall - balanced and good flavor, but maybe not hop forward enough to call an IPA though.

Bold and spicy flavor with a surprisingly mild aroma featuring hops with a hint of caramel.

Medium body lacks clarity but has an excellent bone colored head.

O: A robust and strong IPA with partially hidden alcohol.
