This sour brown ale was aged for 12 months in red wine, whiskey, and bourbon barrels, then masterfully blended for incredible depth of flavor. Notes of bread pudding, figs, and an earthy undertone round out this tart, complex sour. The second in our new Wood Werks series, this gem is best savored slowly.

12 oz bottle purchased from Kit’s Trackisde Crafts, bottled on 4/27/1998, poured into a short tulip glass, a murky dense brown with no head. Aroma is dark fruit, oak, classic Flemish brown ale. The taste is unique. Mildly sour, bittter, fruity, and has some aged barleywine notes which I was not expecting. The carbonation is medium high, not muted by time in the bottle. Not sure if this review will ever be read, but if you do, I would recommend finding one of these and drinking it. Worth it.

Pours a murky brown color, minimal head. Has a funky strawberry aroma, earthy. Flavor is tart and tangy, semi sweet with a dry finish, funky with a gently sourness, strawberry mixes nicely with the brown ale malts. I don’t notice too much barrel presence. Good carbonation, slightly acidic. Overall an interesting barrel aged sour. Tasty, glad I tried it.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip. No bottling date specified.
Appearance: rich dark brown hue which shines ruby when held up to the light. It's totally clear, with a nice effervescence, though a relatively low head of light-tan foam. The color is very nice indeed.
Smell: sweet, with a moderate sourness. There's a little bit of candylike character here, though not quite the sour-toffee experience I normally like in the style. The strawberries come through, though I don't think they help much.
Taste: there is depth of flavor, as the literature suggests, but in this case it's not a thing of wonder. There is definitely some interesting dark-fruit character here with fig and date, but the sourness fails to complement it well. The strawberries, while interesting, seem out of place.
Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a nice enough carbonation and fizzy interest, if not creaminess.
Overall: I am glad I tried this beer. It is interesting, and is a worthwhile experience, but I'm not going to seek it out again. Now I know: strawberries and oud bruin do not seem to make good friends.
