poured from a 12oz can (stating 11.5% abv) into a TG DBA tumbler. pours a thick black with a finger of mocha brown foam head that dissipates into a thick collar around the rim of the glass. chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon mostly in the nose. not a lot of barrel or peppers. taste adds more peppers to the mix of chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon but still don’t detect a lot of barrel. it’s still really tasty. not at all spicy; more chocolaty than anything. full mouthfeel with a lower level of carbonation. really good stuff. my only knock is the additives just cover up the barrel-aging attributes because i got close to nothing on that but this was still very good.

Very dark appearance with slight tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is a slightly sweet slightly spicy. Taste is a very pleasant blend of cinnamon and vanilla with a tough of spice.

8 February 2020 - Beer #23
Price: $11.99 at Ben's Bottle Shop in Vancouver, WA
Appearance: 4 - nearly black black with a very small dark brown head.
Nose: 4 - uh-oh... LOTS of pepper and cinnamon. Smells pretty good - the barrel is helping - but I'm nervous it won't taste like stout
Taste: 4 - nothing to worry about. I don't think I'll ever love these mole-style stouts, but I'm enjoying this one. The spice is complementary, not overpowering. It's strong upfront, but the stout backbone is there.
Mouth: 3 - a bit flat. It's fairly thick, but it's somewhat lifeless.
Overall: 4 - quite well-brewed even if I don't love the style.
Cheers!

A thin clinging head at the edge of glass. Dark as night. This beer is proof that not every stout has to be thick. Skookum out-did themselves here with the perfect interplay of body, cinnamon, and chilies. Some brewers overdo the cinnamon and or the chilies, but in this case the smells are off the charts while on the tongue they meld perfectly. Refreshing. Warming. Delicious. I've gotta try more from this brewery.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass with a thin brown head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, cinnamon, vanilla and slight hot pepper. Flavor is dark toasted malt, Mexican chocolate (chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon) and a light hot pepper bite; lingering mild pepper in the finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. An excellent melding of Mexican chocolate flavors, light hot peppers and stout. The chocolate flavors are well balanced and the pepper give a little hotness without interfering with the other flavors. This is an ambitious flavor combination and it turned out quite well. Nicely done.
