Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a two finger chocolate brown head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, dry chocolate, a touch of coffee and molasses. Flavor is dark toasted malt with moderate char, coffee, mild dark chocolate and licorice. Licorice builds to a somewhat astringent finish, but with lingering chocolate character. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess. A rich, flavorful American style stout with solid malt char and good chocolate, licorice and coffee notes. Great mouth feel. The licorice in the finish takes over a bit more than it should, leaving an aspirin astringency in the finish, although the deep malt and chocolate mostly redeem it. One of the more enjoyable beers I've had from Diamond Knot.
