Birrificio Del Golfo “Bad Triple”
33 cl brown glass bottle, “Da consumarsi preferibilimente entro: 11.21Lo 71.19”
€3,33 at the brewery on 29 November 2019
Notes via stream of consciousness: Pouring it gently from the bottle so as to not disturb the lees, but roughly into the glass it’s a hazy amber beneath a two inch tall head of off-white foam. The aroma suggests grainy malt with a touch of spiciness and a hint of vanilla. Is vanilla added? No, based not the label it appears not, that’s just coming from the Belgian yeast. On to the flavor... it’s smooth, sweetish but not sweet, and not surprisingly a touch vanilla-like and spicy. There’s also some earthiness, some white grape, and the aforementioned vanilla, and a very pleasant base of doughy but also bready maltiness. I’m not finding any hops directly, but nor would I expect to. I feel there are some herbal hops coming through in the finish but that’s it unless the spiciness in the finish is due to hops and not the yeast or alcohol. In the mouth it’s medium bodied, and perhaps even medium-light but it does have a slight bit of a dextrinous quality that makes it seem a little bit fuller. The carbonation is standard to slightly lower than standard, but also fine-bubbled and seemingly natural which leaves it smooth in the end. So, how do we look at this beer in general? I feel that it flies on all cylinders as far as the style is concerned, and it also somehow pulls out a tiny bit of uniqueness. Worth trying.
