Tasted On-Tap 03/08/06 at the Independence Brewpub.

Light amber in color with a light off-white head. Standard American Amber homebrew kit malty aroma and taste with a funky off-flavor and no hop character. Light-medium bodied. Very non descript Amber Ale.

Subpar American Amber ... Pass this one too !

Appearance: clear deep copper in color with a 1/2" head that lingered a while. Some spots of lace stick to the glass during the session.

Smell: hints of toasted nuts and caramels.

Taste: nice malt backbone here, and there is an overall roasted nutty tone, ripe fruits, and caramel. Very mild bitterness, but definitely focused on a nice malty flavor.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. The start is mildly crisp, but the finish is more smooth. The toasted tones linger briefly into the aftertaste.

Drinkability: this is a hearty ale, and I found this to be very drinkable. A nice post-work beer when you don't want a big beer, but want a malty beer.

This beer came with billowing cascades of bubbles rolling down the sides, fresh of the hand pump. When it settled, it revealed a beautiful, glowing dark amber with an even creamy quarter inch head. Simply stunning!

Smelled of dry walnuts, mandarin oranges, white flour and marshmallow.

Tastes of smooth, watery, nutty malts with a little hop sting, like lime rind that crept back along the sides of my tongue. I also detected a little dry, under-ripe banana and a little of the bitter red pieces from the inside of a walnut. I wasn’t really a big fan of the flavor as it really isn‘t my style, but there was an undoubted quality that beams from this one.

The mouth feel was medium bodied and creamy, but felt really heavy. Almost too heavy, but still drinkable.

The heaviness detracts a lot from the drinkability. I really love big Hefes and Stouts, but this one sat in my stomach like a rock. Thankfully, this beer was splendid just to look at, but for me the rest of it was just a little better than all right.
