Doppio Malto "Oak Pils"
33 cl brown glass bottle, "Da consumarsi preferibilmente entro il: 01 2019 L 082 18"
Notes via stream of consciousness: I originally picked up this beer hoping that it was oak aged but there's nothing listed on the label. It's got a nice appearance with a clear golden body beneath a short head of creamy white foam that holds well. The aroma is a little fruity... this is a lager, right? Yes, the Italian "Chiara tipo pils bassa fermentazione" translates to English as clear pils style of a low fermentation. Interesting. I'm also not finding any hops, or even malt for that matter, but it's not a very strong aroma so... moving on to the flavor... the fruitiness remains, and it really is like an ale, although I totally believe them, I just think they've not done it so well, and in fact, there's a light buttery note... diacetyl? Now personally I don't mind a little vicinal diketone here and there, but not in a lager. So, at this point I think we're done but let me finish up anyway. The head has dropped to a collar by this point, which is OK because it held fairly well at the outset, but there's no lacing which is disappointing. I am finding some nice grainy malt to it now, and there are some herbals hops, and it's fairly bitter at about 35 IBUs. It's medium bodied and crisp, which is nice. Something, however, has gone wrong with the fermentation and it just doesn't cut it as a pils. What a shame. I'm surprised because all of the other beers that I tried from them were very good.
