Pours a very nice clear reddish brown with 1.5 inch head with good retention and beautiful abundant lacing. Really looks like lace.
Smell is of caramelized sugars, orange and peppery pine.
Taste contains a whole lot of pine with some mild orange peel flavors and a good amount of brown sugar sweetness. Lots of grapefruit. Very strongly bitter--too much so, in my opinion. Medicinal finish.
Medium bodied with high astringency. Creamy carbonation with some oily residue.
Overall, the bitterness is a bit much for this beer. There is this medicinal aftertaste that lingers on a bit too long for this to be horribly enjoyable, but the hop and malt flavors are relatively well balanced.
A good beer, but I wouldn't buy another growler.

On tap at Hollister 2/5/10
Pours red/orange, clear, with fluffy white head.
Smells of pine, bitterness, earthy hops, and sweet malt.
Flavor is a good balance between red ale and DIPA. Pine, bitterness, and stickiness from the hops along with caramel sweetness from the malt make up the flavor.
Body is medium/heavy, maybe a bit underattenuated but over all quite drinkable and enjoyable.
