Drank on tap at The Brew Hut, George Town, Cayman Islands
Served in a plastic cup
This nitro stout poured with the typical dramatic appearance of a pint of Guinness. An enormous, reverse cascading, khaki colored head enveloped the body and eventually settled to a long lasting, super tight and creamy, finger-tall crown. A blanket of clingy lacing coated the sides of the cup and stuck around until the drink’s end.
The nose was quite yeasty and dry initially. Crisp, powdery and slightly roasty. As the head died down, the malt character came forth. Big roasted malt notes. Some charred grain was noticeable too. A sweet, mocha-like character appeared as the beer warmed.
The flavor profile was similar to the aroma. Loads of roasted malt notes and dry, charred graininess. Bitter espresso came to mind. More roasted malts and bitterness on the back end and the finish. A slightly acrid ashy quality lingered long after the swallow.
Fantastic creamy, frothy, milkshake-like mouthfeel. As the head dissipated and I drank more than just the foam, the liquid was medium in viscosity for the style and contained a fairly subtle effervescence. Wet and somewhat slick on the palate.
Most Cayman Islands Brewing beers are readily available across the island, but I spotted this nitro stout for the first time at the airport on my way home. Enjoying a pint with my dad as we waited for our flight to depart was the perfect way to end our vacation.
