The fourth beer in our series 'Wicked Tales of Scotland' and a 12% Whisky Barrel Aged Double Mash Imperial Stout - aged in fresh Scottish whisky barrels (Glen Garioch).
Release at the brewery February 2nd 2019.

The Boobrie is a big bird, but then so many birds claim to be big. But when we tell you that its wingspan equals that of 17 White Tailed Eagles, maybe you get the idea. Hopefully you’ll never encounter a Boobrie face to face, as its piercing stare is said to drive a man insane. But from a safe distance this water fowl can be seen hunting in the tall grasses along the lochs of Argyllshire in the western Highlands. The monster bird is said to be especially fond of otters which it will swallow in one bite. However, when it takes to the air it will circle the lake at high altitude and then suddenly do an almost supersonic dive, while shrieking in a voice more resembling a bull than a bird. During such an attack the Boobrie is notorious for snatching sheep or even cattle being transported across the lake in boats by the local farmers. According to local myths even humans have now and then been taken to the sky by this gigantic, grisly looking creature. Should you ever decide to visit Scotland for bird-watching, we kinda hope for you that the Boobrie is one fowl that you’re never gonna see.

Copenhagen 22/3 2019. 33 cl bottle from Mikkeller web-shop.another beer from Amagers Wicked tales of Scotland series. An aggressive rendering of the mythological Boobrie in it’s bird form on the label. Seems fairly wicked.

Pours opaque dark brown with a small beige head. Settles as thin layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. Moderate Lacing.

Aroma is surpringly sweet and a little spicy. Not peaty whiskey as I expected. Roasted Corn, licorice, some sweet cake-like quality lurking in the background. Light odor of whisky and peated malts - but quite subdued.

Light carbonation. Thick, oily, tough texture. Flavor has a strong dark sweetness. Followed by a moderate spicy bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet, boozy and with a Woody, barrel aged quality. Alcoholic, boozy burn. Lingering.

Fierce, sweet, barrel-aged boozer.

A long time since I had an Amager beer !
A - Pitch Black oily appearance with a thin Beige head that dies rather quickly.
S - Vanilla, whiskey barrel and some toffee. Very nice indeed.
T - Well so much going on here. The vanilla is up front with the whiskey barrel kicking in mid palate. The finish is very warm and boozy with Wooded toffee, molasses etc. So much going on
M - Very chewy beer. Full body with medium carbonation . 5/5
O - Well this is an absolute winner and represents the very best about barrel aged stouts

Pours almost black with only hints of ruby on the edges, No real head to speak of and what is there dissipates almost immediately. Low carbonation.

Taste is an amazing balance of coffee, a mild sweetness, dark fruit (mostly raisins & fig notes), wonderful oak and vanilla and a bourbon influence. Nicely done.

It's been an age since I've had an Amager beer, but these Danes definitely don't mess around when it comes to big stouts, so I was happy to crack this one. Also, c'mon, that is a great name. The Boobrie is a big fuck-off stout aged in Scotch barrels (Glen Garioch, to be specific), so that's what we're contending with here. I think this was bottled some time in 2019 but I'm not 100% sure. Love me a good pre-aged stout, especially from a trustworthy brewery like this.

Pours a viscous, motor-oil black (with some surprising ruby/brownish highlights if held to direct light) with a thin, retentive, tannish head that has good legs but not much else going for it. I mean, I didn't really expect to be wowed by the appearance here, and it's certainly serviceable, but I think it could probably be a bit better, to put it bluntly. It does look a bit menacing, I suppose, especially if I swirl the glass to re-rouse the head a tad, but it's still just a little under par. Hoping the nose and taste pick up the slack (which I'm sure they will).

Smells like charred brown sugar, caramel, and roasted espresso beans with a hint of dark fruit and some light Scotch-influenced smoke in there. Just a slight peat note, but with some dark berry aspects and demerara sugar smoothing it all out. A bit of a sweet, bourbon-y, oaky wood note with tannic complexity and lots of complex dark malt roastiness doing an absolute number on my senses. Yup, this is what I wanted! It's what I hoped for! It's a badass, whisky barrel aged stout for the real stout fans out there.

Flavors of molasses, light fennel-type spice, cocoa, and brown sugar. A bit of raisin-y dark fruit in the mid-palate along with some slight roast (less than expected but still a modest amount, honestly). Semi-stiff tannic woodiness toward the finish, which is clean and surprisingly not boozy. Well, it's a little boozy, but less than you'd think given the provenance of the barrels involved here and the ABV, for starters. Almost has a bit of a rye-like earthiness and caraway-esque flavor in the finish. Not very smoky or peaty, but I accept that not all whisky barrel stouts are going to pick up the latent peatiness, so it's fine. What matters is that this is rather great drinking, with solid complexity and strength. I would definitely drink it again, and it would probably be good with a year or two extra on it.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a quarter finger khaki head with that dissipates to a thick film with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, dark and baker's chocolate, oak, mild whiskey; a little oxidation. Flavor is dark toasted malt, baker's chocolate, coffee, Scotch whiskey with light peating, dates and raisins. A bit more peaty Scotch whiskey in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. Haven't had anything from Amager in a long time and glad I grabbed this bottle. Very solid, flavorful stout malt body supports some solid Scotch whiskey barrelling character, with solid oak notes. Really a nicely made Scotch stout. Wish I could get more stouts aged in one of the most flavorful whiskey varieties out there. A rare treat. Appears to be a few years old (2023 best by date; but probably a one-off, so a 2019 offering). Caught some oxidation in the aroma, but nothing in the flavor. Clearly could stand up to many years.

Pours jet black with almost no head. The nose is heavy on the whisky (sweet, more like bourbon), black licorice, and brown sugar. A bit of dark fruit and some burnt toffee. The taste is awesome. A perfect mix of sweet bourbon and black licorice. The dark fruit (cherries, blackberries) are much stronger on the taste than on the nose. Caramel, charred wood, and maybe a touch of soy sauce. Sounds unappealing, but it mingles nicely. Mouthfeel is creamy and thick. Overall this is a wonderful beer and I would definitely buy another.

From the bottle in a snifter, this fine imperial pours a
deep obsidian with brown highlights and a thin ring of
off white foam that sizzles to a thin ring. Nose of rich
bourbon, sweet brown sugars, dark fruits of dates and
raisins, dark rum, dark chocolate, and dark coffee. Flavors
follow the nose with brown sugars, dark cocoa, subtle rye,
bourbon, dark coffee, raisins, fig notes, oak, vanilla, and
warming bourbon. Nice mouth feels; full body, smooth,
rich, slick, warming.....low carbonation....unreal!
