Bottle courtesy of Kristina at West Lakeview Liquors. Served in a Nolet's taster tulip.
A - A dime of foam quickly sizzles to nothing. Hazed ruby-brown body. Pretty dull looking brew.
S - Very fruity, with plenty of caramel apple, toffee, brown sugar, and light bread character. As it warms more of the oak character emerges, but it's surprisingly tame for 13 months in the port cask.
T - Taste seems a little less articulated. Spicy alcohol esters, residual hop bitterness, oak, and significantly less malt sweetness - mostly faint caramelized apple. Base beer (whatever it was) seems to have been a bit overwhelmed by wood, and not port unfortunuately. Maybe a bit of oxidation.
M - A touch thin for a high-ABV barleywine, but otherwise quite pleasant. More tingly carbonation than I would have expected from the appearance. Smooth pleasant texture, lightly tannic finish, a bit of alcohol warmth.
D - This was easier to drink than the port version of Hr. Frederiksen, but still wasn't anything mind-blowing. I'd have it again on a fresher palate to see if I missed something, but
