Pitch, inky black colour with a massive, rocky, tan head. Great head retention. Very nice.

Sweet, slightly roasty, alcoholic aroma with a nice fruity note from the Cognac. Typically restrained European barrel aged stout.

This is a really interesting stout. The base beer itself is mostly roasty with just a hint of ash and bitter chocolate. This isn't full of coffee, sweetness or any of the other flavours that would characterise an American stout. The oak is restrained adding just some tannins, mild fruitiness and some mild alcohol. I actually wish the Cognac were a bit more prominent.

Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Quite oily. Very nice.

I really like this but find the savoury character and lack of sweetness just a little odd and think the entire flavour profile here would have benefited from a dose of sweetness and a touch more barrelling.

A - A finger of tan foam settles to a thick collar, partial cap, and a few specks of lace. Body is a very dark near-black color.

S - Holy smoke! Char, ash, smoke, and only a faint undercurrent of of malt sweetness and cognac. Mostly asphalt, char, tar, ashtray, burnt espresso and anything else that you can think of in the flavor realm.

T - A tiny bit sweeter, with some dark fruit Baltic porter flavors underneath all the smoke, char, roast that lay waste to one's palate. There's the tiniest bit of cognac, but this is pretty much a fireplace in liquid format. Alcohol is pretty well-hidden, and I actually kind of dig the unabashed acrid roast until the finish, which had me feeling like I'd smoked 12 cigarettes at once.

M - Surprisingly active carbonation that is more consistent with the Baltic Porter style. Very, dry, roast, burnt, and charry texture. Medium-full body with some oaky dryness to it.

D - I liked this more than most, as I'm not entirely Americanized when it comes to the ideal level of sweetness in dark beers. Still, I'd struggle to drink more than 4oz of this at a time. Worth checking out if dig extremely heavy smoke. Wish there had been more cognac though.
