IBU 35.
A - Gorgeous charcoal colour packs the glass. Appears as a mercilessly light-swallowing behemoth with an elegant halo of biscuit-cream foam.
S - Caramalised apple fruit scrapings as from an apple crumble combined with berry tart aromas. Bourbon features prominently. No smoke.
T - A lorry-load of bourbon coats the tongue. That this beer has been aged in bourbon barrels really shows. I tried to espy smoke either in the smell or the taste but I honestly would never have been able to tell you that this was a smoked porter. The bourbon flavour certainly leads, but the oak shows through mid-sip and finishes with a roasted, mellow-booze quality. A hint of vanilla as it warms.
M - Wholesome but not quite as compact or dense as the appearance would lead one to expect. Nice light-medium carbonation. Not too in your face.
O - This beer is the best beer I've had from Maui Brewing Company, a beer which carries its abv. gracefully and is confident in the power of its bourbon aging. The bourbon perhaps overshadows some of the subtler flavours which one might have hoped to find and there was no discernable smoked element at any point in the process. Sort of reminds me of a Newfoundland dog; big, black, powerful and suprisingly mellow.
