maui never gets enough credit. i think all of their beer is really good, and some are world class, but it seems like everyone overlooks them because they dont ever do sours and barrel aged beers. who cares, this is a great hefeweizen. not quite the huge fluffy white head i like to see in the style, but pretty enough in the glass, predictably hazy and creamy looking. it smells a little brighter than it tastes, fresh sliced banana. not too ripe, and a hint of that soft clove spice and grassy herb thing, very german, could be an import. in the taste, there is a drop off in the yeast flavor, or rather it is taken over a little bit my the flavor and texture of the wheat malt base. more body than a lot of these, its really fluffy and dense, lasting on the tongue despite being on the dry side, and really expanding to every corner of the mouth. i love that. there is a little tannic thing from the wheat though that breaks it down a little early, and a mild sharpness that comes from that, but overall this is really good. carbonation is enormous, and its refreshing for how big it is. nice yeast strain, nice execution.

On tap at Maui Brewing Company in Kihei, HI.
Pours a murky honey gold with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of wheat, banana, caramel, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, banana, and spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is a solid American take on the style.
