I thought this was mediocre at best.

Really enjoyed this and didn't know they did this style.
On tap at the Lahaina location into snifter.
A nice deep dark color, nice on the nose and smooth going down with a creamy mouthfeel.
While this says it's 7.5%, the boards at both the Kihei and Lahaina location show it at 10%, which isn't noticable.

This beer is 8.5% and tastes a bit like cough syrup.

A - Ruby brown; surprised by the reddish tinges although I guess it's hinted in the name.
S - Sweet and malty. Not a prominent bouquet.
T - Sweet and malty, no hop bitterness and no alcholic heat.
M - Slick, malty and syrupy.
O - The 8.5% abv. is well-disguised which demands credit. The flavours work well with the mouthfeel but I'd look for a little more depth of flavour and complexity of character. Slightly disappointing.

Handsome mahogany color in the pint shaker with a modest foam. Plenty of carbonation on the tongue. Taste is the classic big, dark, sweet malt with a hoppy edge.
The dark roast malt and caramel flavors are expansive. Not much actual hop flavor, but the dark scratchy taste holds its own against the sugars. Still, it's an avalanche of malt. This has some of the cakey flavor of date bread with the bitter edge of walnut skins.
Mild aroma of coffee and chocolate puddling with a whiff of fruitcake. Sweet finish with the back of the throat bitter twang. On tap at Pizza Port in Ocean Beach.

On tap at Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
Pours a clear iced tea color with a 1/2 inch tan head that fades to nothing. No lace whatsoever. Smell is of malt, dark fruits, and some yeast aromas. Taste is of malt, dark fruits, caramel, and alcohol. There is a definite alcohol burn in the back of the throat after each sip. This beer has a pretty good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good doppelbock but there is a bit too much of an alcohol presence in my opinion.

I bought a growler to take to our beach resort in Maui. This was such a good doppelbock, tasted like I was in Germany. The massive Maui surf kept me grounded in reality though.
My thoughts:
The appearance was OK, dark red-to-deep brown color, thick but short-lived tan foam. The smell and flavor were very tasty, sweet malts and a little burnt malt in the aroma too. Very good sweetness in the after-taste which lasted a long time, thickish beer with coating quality.
One of the top three from the brewery in my opinion.
