Notes from an inquiry to Maui Brewing about this beer (reply by Tony Ren):
The Belgian KonaRed Ale was a seasonal beer we created with some coffee-fruit extract which came from the KonaRed beverage company on the big island. Coffee-fruit is the berry flesh that surrounds the coffee bean and has extremely high levels of antioxidants. In this Belgian-style red, the coffee-fruit added a pleasant dark fruit sweetness with subtle tartness which we found very enjoyable. As we only brewed up a 10bbl batch of this recipe, very limited amounts were allocated to markets outside of our Maui brewpub so I hope you found this beer pleasing as well.
My review notes:
Dark copper body with a thin white head and plenty of rings of lacing. The aroma hinted at spices and cinnamon. The taste came across with a spicy maltiness; peppery, cinnamon; sprightly hop bitterness. Mouthfeel seemed light and somewhat watery with a clean, crisp, dry finish.
Overall, the flavor was very good. I didn't get any of the fruit sweetness or tartness per se, but thought it was unique and enjoyable such as it was.
