Served in a Chardonnay style wine glass, the 1 year aged Trippel is a clear dark yellow with a white collar and skim that left sticky lace.
The aroma, whoa, right of the bat it smells soured. Maybe not aged in the best conditions? Vinegar and diacetyl really dominate the sugar and spice lying beneath. Bad start, dare I move forward? I do...
Well, the taste is more tempered then the nose, but it's still dominated by butterscotch like diacetyl. Beyond that is a nice candi sweetness, and a bit of caramel, but not much spiciness. The fact that it was essentially spoiled made it pretty bad though, I'm not sure why they would serve this. Might have been good fresh, but not in this state.
The mouthfeel was cloying, very malty for a trippel. It was also creamy and effervescent, but much too heavy, none of the Belgian digestablity that they strive for.
At first, I thought this was a drain tour. But I'm cheap, and I felt bad for the bar tender eagerly anticipating my reaction on a slow day, so diplomatically said it was OK but not my favorite, and soldiered through. Eventually, my pallet got used to the off flavors and I made it through. But it wasn't easy. I probably shouldn't have been so nice.
