I expected on my first visit to Portland to be overloaded with hoppy beers. The 90 Shilling Scotch Ale was a very pleasant surprise, It was dark, opaque, just a tinge of red in color with a wonderful malty smell. Thankfully it was the lighter version since we arrived on a day that was as hot as back home in Alabama. It still had a nice body that lingered in the mouth after each swallow. It had a nice creamy head that lingered and left a nice lace on the side of the glass. There was just a hint of hops but for the most part the malt was the backbone of the brew. Very drinkable at 6% alcohol. Starting to regret not bringing home a growler of this one.

This would-be Scottish-style ale initially presented with a fragrance of some sort. I think it was sweet. But before I could give it my full attentions, it vanished and never resurfaced. I do recall enjoying it, however briefly, and I hope it returns someday.
I would characterize the rest of this beer as a routine amber ale that doesnt particularly distinguish itself as a Scottish. It is dark chestnut color with no suds and a modest malt sweetness of limited reach. Not flawed, but it fails to inspire.
