Given the choice I'd say this hearty black ale tips more into stout territory than porter. Roasted barley imparts a dry carbonized edge that's almost - but not quite - charred. The aroma does smell charred, perhaps because acrid airs wafting in from the kitchen have unduly accented it. It's unfortunate that they don't shut the kitchen doors, allowing smells to drift into the dining room, and also, that the smells are so unappealing. I hope they've got a good working fire extinguisher on hand because it smells like it might come in handy.
Despite the untoward environmental intrusion, this is a solid drinking beer with a slight Baltic persuasion. Recommended.
