Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a slightly hazy, medium reddish orange with a half finger khaki head with great retention and thick lacing. Looks nice. Aroma of candi malt, raisins, plums and faint light stone fruit. Flavor is candi malt, citron, raisins, light stone fruit, unidentifiable fruit esters, faint whiskey; slightly tart in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess, nice mouth feel. An interesting take on the quad style. The fruity Belgian yeast is clear in the flavor, but there is also a light wildness like a farmhouse yeast present too. In addition, the fruit notes lean to lighter fruit, even vague citrus notes rather than the darker stone fruit of a traditional quad. It is nevertheless a flavorful and even refreshing domestic take on a Belgian style ale. The barreling character is modest, but present when watching for it (apparently 50% was barreled in whiskey barrels). Good introduction to the brewery. I'll watch for a porter or stout from them.
