I believe the North Fork makes a few different barleywines. This is the one that was on tap today, my first visit to the beer shrine out on Mount Baker Highway. Hair of the Frog is a deep red color. The smell is very faint. The beer has a fine aroma of sweet malts and fruitiness but it is almost undetectable. I kind of expected it to taste like a stronger version of Son of Frog, if only because of the name. Yet it was much better. Some hops come through but sweet caramel and roasted malts underlie fruity esters and a touch of tangible alcohol. It is super carbonated for a high-ABV barleywine, and drinks dangerously smoothly. Definitely give this a try if you are not the one who has to drive home - I do not believe public transportation serves the area!

Served in 10oz glass. Poured a semi-cloudy dark brown with just a thin cap of tan head that had OK retention and lacing. The aromas were mostly thick, sweet malts with some hops floating around in the background. There was just a bit of a noticeable alcohol scent, which varies with how long a given batch has aged.

The flavors featured big, bold malts that had some hops tingling the tongue. The alcohol was noticeable, but not overpoweringly so.

The body was very good, full and smooth without being overly heavy or sticky. Drinkability is very good for 10+% brew, but you really feel it after a couple.

Overall, a very good beer. A must try if visit the brewery.

My last beer of the evening was this smooth barleywine. Apparently North Fork brews a variety of barleywines ranging up to 13% ABV. This one came in an 8-oz. Irish coffee glass with a clever name reminiscent of some other breweries in Portland and Issaquah. It was dark tawny with minimal CO2 and strong American-style bittering integrated into a vibrant fruity nose and taste. Notes of plum and fig resounded with sharp bittering and some alcoholic heat.

Very nice.
