This triple mashed Barleywine was brewed 4/23/09 to celebrate the 1,000th batch of beer at the brewery. It's the only beer that has been bottled, and perhaps, may ever be bottled by NF.

Picked up at the brewery, swing-top bottle.

A: Bottle opens without a sound. Dark amber, not a lick of head. Viscous on the pour.

S: Raisins, fruitless gummy candy, faded hops,

T: Earthy sweetness, plum skins, dried prune, and sticky hops. There is a suggestion of some abrasive souring which detracts from the sweet notes. Soft toffee finish.

M: Thick and syrupy, but almost no carbonation. The heavy body carries it a bit further than a lighter barleywine but is still short of great. Maybe the swing-top wasn't the best choice here.

O: Lots of promise in flavor but the low carb and light sourness are a big turnoff.

This brew is mind-blowingly complex, with notes of rhubarb, raisin, walnut, dry sherry, roasted chestnut, star fruit, kiwi, guava, kumquat, apricot, cherry, fig, date, mandarin orange/tangerine, nutmeg, and allspice. There are other flavors that I haven't even begun to pin down yet, and the balance is impeccable. It is very dry in the finish, and the body is syrupy and mouth-coating in a really good way.

It's a little over 11% abv, and there's no excess heat, whatsoever.

Wow...just wow.

Swing top 16oz bottle into 10oz glass. Poured a clean, clear reddish mahogany color with just a faint ring of off-white head that had low retention and lacing.

The aroma was solid malts, just a bit sweet, with a hint of hops just barely noticeable in the background. A large blast of malts attack the tongue, completely blanketing it and serving notice of its arrival. A little sweet yet, i think a few more months will smooth it out more and reduce the slight alcohol burn that is currently there.

The body is full, solid and well-rounded. Drinkability is very good, for brew this strong. Overall, a really good beer to celebrate The North Forks 1,000th batch of beer.
