i love a baltic porter, and i like the way this one has been enhanced by the barrel. oakshire always does such a great job with this kind of thing, i knew it was going to be great. the base beer under all the barrel here is excellent, seemingly a little lighter than many, not in color, its still real dark to look at, but in the grain complexion, the darkest thing here seems to be the barrel char, there isnt a big roasty or unmalted dark barley intensity to this, it never quite gets that low, which i think is kind of neat, it lets me taste the yeast a little more, and it seems to kind of extend the beer past where it usually goes, the bourbon has a space at the end that is entirely its own. lots of oak to this, subtle notes of soy sauce and prune, with a little molasses type sweetness to it, raisin too. it tastes extremely mature and long aged, even a touch oxidized, but it all comes together really well. lots of whiskey and richness to this, tons of body and palate coating, but not overly sweet either. overall a delicious and unique offering from these guys!
