Look: Chestnut brown on the pour and deep red-brown in the glass with a sudsy beige head that quickly builds and slowly settles to a lid, leaving good lacing behind
Aroma: Warm brown bread, dried dark fruit, toffee, light earthy notes, melanoidin, and some caramel
Taste: A rush of brown bread, crust, and a dark fruit salad open it up with notes of dates, prunes, figs, and raisins all present. Sweet toffee and caramel intermingle with the dark fruit as some earthy and even lightly spicy hops are noticeable as well and closes with another rush of toasted grains, bread, dough, and crust, along with light ethanol
Mouthfeel: Full, smooth, medium-high carbonation, and a soft, smooth, and clean finish
Overall: I dig it. I’ll always support more local-made Doppelbocks so it was cool to see that these folks made one and it’s tasty and well put-together. Checks all the style boxes and is dangerously drinkable at 8% too but if dark fruit isn’t your thing, this may not be your kind of Doppel as the dark fruit component, which I personally dig, is strong throughout

16oz can
Pours a finger of creamy tan head into my Nonic. Retention is maybe a hair above average, the head lasting a couple minutes. Initial lacing looks very nice. Body is nearly black, with only a few brown hues around the edges. Looks pretty good so far.
Nose hits first with raisins that become more intense with agitation; figs, tartness as well. Malty, moderately sweet. Smells good, could have some more complexity.
However the flavor is a little much for me, this raisin character is like drinking fruit cake. Maltiness is quite intense as well. Whispers of umami soy sauce and potential oxidation.
Carbonation is on the lower end. Sweetness is very high, somewhat cloying, and the attenuation simply isn't adequate. Body isn't chewy, but it's sticky and makes its presence known. Bitterness is not very perceptible. Overall this is just a bad mouthfeel, I can't stand the sweetness here.
Drinkability is very poor.
Appearance turned out somewhat poor as well. Lacing was pretty barren.
After having a handful of Doppelbocks, I can say somewhat confidently that this level of richness is not necessary. I don't care for this beer at all, and for the first time in...what feels like a decade, I'll be dumping this.
