I was able to try Brew Keeper's take on a Scotch Ale on tap at the Brew Keeper on 9/24/2009. The served it to me in a standard Mad Brewer pint glass.
This Scotch Ale was a blend on two different red colors. It was a dark cranberry red along the sides and a dark ruby red in the center. Sitting on top of this red brew was a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch head of pure white foam. It had good retention that left behind a string of white foamy rings and a few small blots of lace.
The aroma of this Scotch Ale was very fruity. The two biggest fruit scents in this beer was the apple and the pear. When it was swirled around, the scent of the beer reminded me of the smell of fresh fruits at a local farmer's market. There wasn't all that much behind the juicy fruits. My nose was only able to pick out a quick whiff of toasted malts and a tiny speck of caramel.
The taste was nothing like what the aroma suggested. The taste was all about the malts. They were malts with a touch of smoke to them. Following the lightly smoked malts was a hint of juicy fruits, a touch of chocolate, and then this beer finishes up some bitter fruity hops. I'm glad that the taste was as fruity as the aroma. That would have been OK, but I think this taste is better than that would have been.
This was a light to medium bodied Scotch Ale with enough carbonation and with an aftertaste of some lightly smoked malts, fruity hops, and a touch of juicy fruits at the end.
Overall, this wasn't a bad Scotch Ale. The Brew Keeper makes some really good beers and some really bad beers. This one is in the middle towards the good side. It can be a little fruity at times, but just wait till you taste those lightly smoked malts.
