This year’s From the Vault Beer Series highlights a beer Double Mountain first made back in 2017, Sweet Jane IPA. Orange/red in color, aggressively balanced as West Coast IPA’s are, and all the fun pine and citrus aromas. First off, we wanted to get some of that same color without the use of crystal malts. Enter Red X from Best Malz, a German malt that provides nice red and orange color without the caramel notes. This keeps it rounded and balanced, but without the perceived sweetness that can come from crystal malts, providing a good springboard for the hops.

nice recipe, i guess its a throwback but i missed it the first time around, a clean and bitter ipa, tidy and well refined, flavorful but also somewhat unremarkable in terms of hop profile, this smells and tastes like a fair few others out there, its special because the quality is super high, not because its all that original on the hop side. the color is pretty rusty orange toned with a fat white head on top, slightly fuller and creamy feeling too, but not as sweet as they often are when they are this color, and rather light on malt character overall, aside from body. the hops hit like bitter orange peel, fresh cut pine, and a bit of a juniper thing too, short of medicinal, more herbal and verdant, and the aroma and flavor are about the same, a little more juiciness in the nose, a little more bitter back end in the flavor, nice flow, pretty quick finishing, just off dry, neutral ferment, faintly toasted malt, nice balance but very much a northwestern ipa through and through. i think double mountain is one of the most trustworthy breweries across so many styles, like no matter what they do its going to be good, and this falls in line with that. almost familiar as an ipa, but their quality stamp makes it well ahead of the crowd. they always nail the basics...

Color is clear orangey amber with plenty of foam in the New Belgium snifter. Fruity and piney aroma with orange and leaf mold. Lime in the nose. Quite dry. Flavor is a big orange zest with mango and a woody finish. Quite bitter. Overall this is a highly flavored hoppy brew that makes a statement with every sip. A little too talkative for my taste. From the 500 ml bottle purcased at a local Co-op market. Dated 2/21/23.

Bottle from Boise Co-op Meridian. Medium amber, clear, foamy head lasts awhile. Aroma and taste are a complex mess of pine, dank notes, floral, malts. Soapy at times, sweet at others. Not sure what the end game was, but it took a detour somewhere. Looking to see if I get accustomed to it...

Deep and clear amber body; thick, sticky head. Mild scent of orange and tangerine. Sweet, citrus flavor; biting hop bitterness building up from midway through the sip and peaking during the finish. Medium-heavy body; almost tart but ultimately leaving a silky, light sweetness on the palate.
A pretty tasty IPA, a bit different from many but quite approachable.

Big, dense, off-white rocky head, clean amber color, bright clarity. Holy pine, weeds, grass, dankness, citrus aroma Batman. Toasted bread, nutmeg, sweet citrus, and then pine resin to finish it out. Rounded mouthfeel with crisp carbonation, and a medium body. Surprisingly well-balanced for as much hop character as there is in this beer. This is a nice subversion from the common IPA flavor profile you'll find these days.

A truly classic looking IPA, Sweet Jane pours a delicious looking clean amber color. The orange hued body is topped by a foamy white head that has moderate lacing and pretty good surface coverage retention.
Itsmells classic too, with it's caramel drizzled white bread base, smothered with weed and pine, but there is something different... Oniony and savory herb inspired.
And Bam!, it hits you. This is a full flavored, malt balanced and meaty IPA. More of a spiced bread than your typical grapefruit/pine/biscuit balance. Almost like what you would expect, or even hope that a traditional English IPA should taste like, but with an intensely spiced finish.
And in that fashion, it feels full. It cranks the dial slowly from sweet to savory to bitter. The bubbly flow is at the perfect level to lift everything evenly without distracting the aromas or flavor. It's actually difficult to describe. This is just right for the flavor. Just right.
A meal in a glass, Sweet Jane is. This is a beer to get you through a long haul, or the cold winter months. It's spicy, balanced, strong, bit most importantly, it's delicious. Cheers.

500ml bottle - so, as the label tells us really nothing, are we to expect some, er, 'dank' in these here hops?
This beer pours clear, medium copper amber colour, with a fistful of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves some attractive tiered snow rime lace around the glass as it evenly seeps away.
It smells of muddled tropical fruit (pineapple, guava, and a hint of mango), bready and doughy caramel malt, further domestic citrus flesh, and some leafy, weedy, and mildly dank piney green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, more mixed and matched exotic fruitiness, some plain orange and red grapefruit rind acerbity, and a relatively tame weedy, musty, and floral verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-satisfying frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, with the hops too stoned or something to make any sort of fuss here. It finishes trending dry, the hops apparently having something else up their sleeve - take that as you will.
Overall, this is a pleasant enough West Coast IPA, with the assumed dank factor kept to a hush-hush minimum. Easy to drink, nice and balanced, and worthy of having a few, even given the near 15-proof wowee sauce contingent. Sweet Myrcene Jane?
