This is the very first McGuire's doppelbock, and is actually an ale styled as a doppelbock. I had a couple fairly in-depth conversations regarding this beer with Mike, the brewmaster. He was quite clear on the styling of the beer. He does plan to revise the recipe in 2008 to brew a true, bottom-fermenting lager.
Enough semantics. This brew was poured from the tap and presented in a cervoise, a dark plum color with bright ruby highlights in the direct light. Thin brownish cap and collar shows good retention. Mild cherry notes on the nose, with toasted chocolate malt, sweet malt, and buttery scents. Flavor of dark fruits, predominantly cherries, with a sweet malty backbone. No real hops bitterness, though its balanced toward the middle of the spectrum. Mouth is semi-viscous edging toward thin, with a light carbonation. Its wet and smooth. Drinkability is quite good; its easygoing and tasty, as well as smooth and, at 8.4% quaffable in moderation.
Overall: A solid doppelbock, though a bit thin for my tastes. Also less malty than might be expected from a doppelbock. Brewmaster Mike says that these issues will be addressed in future batches. Im looking forward to next years release!
