The aroma is peaty with malt, yeast, and a touch of smoke. The appearance is mahogany with a medium sized sudsy head. The flavor is like the aroma with plenty of peat and a touch of butterscotch. The palate is average. Overall it's an interesting beer and worth a try. It's alright.

Updated 2/19/08: Brewmaster Mike has been tweaking the old recipies, and with good results.

Table Talker declares: "Our malty winter warmer is a perennial favorite. We use Scottish Pale malt dried in peat-fired kilns for an authentic Highlands flavor." ABV is listed at 7.2%. This is McGuire's Spring release.

The late Winter/Early Spring seasonal, it's presented in a pint glass, dark brown color with reddish hue in the light, creamy head with a moderate rate of fade down to a a bit of small lacing. Nose is firmly malty (Mike has stated that he's going for more malt character in all the brews) with middle-of-the road sweetness. Slightly buttery. Little smokiness noted. In the mouth, it's dry and malty up front with mild notes of smoke. Clean dry finish. 7.2% ABV is well-masked. Mouth is crisp and bubbly with middle viscosity. It's smooth and easily glides down the tongue and throat, adding to its drinkability. Very good yet potent at 7.2%

Overall: A solid Scotch ale, subtle and drinkable. No in-your-face peat or alcohol here; rather it's more like a strong brown ale with smoky notes. Give one a try if you're at McGuire's (Pensacola) around February.

This beer pours a nice dark brownish amber however the head quickly dissipates. Taste is slightly malty with big peat and smoke flavors. It was a little more on the smoky side then I prefer in my Scotch Ales. It had a relatively thin mouthfeel as well. Alcohol content is right about 7.5%. The Scotch Ale was worth a try but I did not find myself wanting to order another.
