On-cask 12/11/2011 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass. I drank this beer side-by-side with the Serebrianka Hops version of the same beer.
A: The beer is a deep dark brown color with a large dense beige head that fades very slowly and leaves a thick on the glass.
S: The aroma contains roasted malts, chocolate, oats, coffee and a touch of hops.
T: The taste starts out with bitter-sweet flavors of dark chocolate and some coffee. There are some flavors of dark fruit and oats in the background. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and creates a nice balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.
M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium-to-heavy body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is dry but slightly sticky.
O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, there was very little difference between the two versions except that the Crystal hops version is creamier and the Serebrianka hops version is a bit crisper. Overall it’s a good stout to drink for a while.
