Served on-tap at the Monroeville brewpub. The ale was aged on heather tips.
A: The Scotch ale is a ruddy brown color, opaque with a minimal head. The ale is a little lighter than I was expecting for a beefy wee heavy.
S: The nose is malty, intensely bready, with a floral aroma of heather. The sweetness is enough to overpower the grains at times.
T: The higher alcohol level really comes through in the first sip. The booziness mixes with the sweet heather, floral and hot, before yielding to grains mid-sip. The breadiness lacks any discernible smoke aspects, instead relying on the strength of the toasted grains to drive the flavor. More heather appears at the end, a sweet floral presence that stands in nicely for the hops.
M: The mouthfeel is dominated by flowers and booze, each strong in their own right. A little dash of peated malts would be excellent.
D: At nearly 10%, this is not an ale to take lightly. I finished my glass and called it a day, too strong to dig into another.
