Our light dark beer. Think of a light beer but with color, body and flavor—brown ale’s little brother. This style was originally brewed to quench the thirst of coal miners and other laborers without the intoxicating effects of the stronger pale ales and stouts. Our was originally brewed to celebrate Sunderland (UK) Football Club's ascension to the Premier League in May 2007. It proved so popular we've kept it as a year-round ale. Floor malted barley and an English yeast strain impart an authentic English flavor. Lighter alcohol that Bud or Miller lights.

This beer is light brown in color, transparent, slightly hazy, with a creamy off-white head that leaves medium lacing down the glass.

The aroma is roasted and toasted malt, nutty, an occasional touch of toffee.

The taste follows the aromas, it is very malty, but pleasantly so, and has a balanced bitter finish. This is a very drinkable beer and the best American representation of the style I have ever had.

This is my absolute favorite beer from this brewery, and one of my favorite beers, period. I only don't rank it perfect because of the brewery's style. They brew in 20 gallon batches (actually brew in 2 10 gallon batches) so each time it's a bit different. That's part of the amazingness.

A: The body is a brown (or perhaps better described as a pale chocolate) to dark amber with a slight haze, but always good active carbonation. The head white to slightly beige.

S: There's a slight roast and some floral notes, from English hops. The roast is not an intense, coffee roast, but instead like the carmelized bits at the end of a roast.

T: The taste follows through with a rich roasted, toasted, caramel, slightly grainy set of flavors, highly complex. This beer is not robust by any means. It's nothing like so many beers that jack up the alcohol to up complexity.

M: Wonderful, enough carb to bite and refresh, not so much it fills up.

D: Wonderful. Great to sit and contemplate, or great to quaff.
