Sarasota Brewing Co. "Red Java Laga"
on tap at the brewery, 3 July 2015
$4 pint during happy hour
Listed at 6.5% abv and 28 IBUs
Appearance: Deep gold. Clear. No head equals no retention, and pretty much no lacing. Perhaps it was a dirty glass from the bar, or just an improper pour that lost it's head while waiting to be served.
Aroma: Limited aroma with some maltiness.
Flavor: Malt and alcohol combine in the flavor - the alcohol is too clearly obvious. A touch spicy. Apple fruitiness. Most likely a warmer than anticipated fermentation.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a limited, fine-bubbled carbonation.
Overall: Maibock? As a strong lager I'd find it acceptable but it doesn't quite fit the Maibock style with its quirks: lack of head retention, alcohol in the flavor, and limited body. Still, although it scores poorly for style, not a bad pint to relax with.

A: Pours a nice golden hue with a nice solid head. Very good retention with some lace.
S: Aromas of lightly roasted malt, light summer fruit, and hints of grassy hops.
T: Very much like the aroma. Mostly fruity with hints of apple and pear. Mild sweetness with grassy tones showing through.
M: Medium in body, smooth nicely carbonated.
D: Not bad one of the better offerings at Sarasota Brewing.

After visiting friends in Venice, we decided to take 72/70 back to the other coast again and stop by. We first couldn't find the place. SBC is a brewpub with character IMO. Found their Maibock on the menu and since I haven't had one in a while...here we go
A - Came in a pint glass with a nice head that didn't seem to wants to disappear fast.
S - A German helles beer!
T - I was pleasantly surprised. I haven't had a "real" Maibock for quite some time, but as far as I could remember, it came pretty close Zoller Hof's or Schwabenbrau's Maibock.
M - Same as taste, but could have been a little more of that bock thing. Definatly some character with the higher ABV.
D - Went down very well. Had to drive 4hr, so I chose not to have another one.
